International Students at Koonung Secondary College
Koonung Secondary College has participated in the International Student Program for a number of years. Our students come from a variety of countries including China, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Columbia, Malaysia, Brazil, Vietnam, Cambodia and Germany. We expect to have 30 students at Koonung in 2008. We offer ESL for students from Years 9 through to 12.

The school is situated in the suburb of Mont Albert North which is about 14 km form Melbourne’s CBD. The school is located near two large shopping areas, Box Hill Central and Doncaster Shoppingtown. The school is well served by public transport. Several buses pass the school that go to the city, Doncaster and Box Hill. The train station and the tram lines are all within walking distance. Box Hill Hospital is also a short distance from the school.

Koonung Secondary College has a strong sense of community. Set in a green, spacious and inviting environment, we are a traditional school with a highly experienced teaching staff. We have strong values, set high standards and have high expectations for our students. Uniform is compulsory and absenteeism is very low. Students are strongly encouraged apply for leadership opportunities.

Facilities: A 180-seat theatre, library, five plexi-paved tennis courts, two gymnasiums, ovals, eight netball courts, a synthetic hockey pitch, an extensive computer network, a library resource centre, a large open-plan flexible learning centre, and a senior study centre.

Special Programs and extracurricular activities: Music tuition is available and several bands and ensembles perform on a regular basis. School musical productions, dramatic and cultural arts festivals are held regularly. Inter-school sport competition occur weekly. Recreational and study camps are organised so students may experience at least three camps during their school life.

Support Services for International Students: Koonung has separate ESL classes for Years 9-12. At Years 7 and 8 students are tested and offered a reading program if necessary. International students and ESL students have access to their own room. The room is open at lunchtimes for extra tuition and for students to eat lunch. We have teaching aides who speak Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese, who attend classes with students. Homework sessions are in the library 3 afternoons a week and it is also open at 8.00am every morning.

International students have a Manager and access to a full time student counsellor and nurse.
