To enhance our music and drama curriculum, Koonung offers a wide and exciting range of extra-curricular activities to develop collaboration skills, independence and social connection. 

Instrumental Music

Koonung offers a wide range of instrumental music lessons along with the opportunity for students to play with an ensemble group or band. Each year, an Autumn Concert and Spring Concert are held so the students can showcase what they have been working on throughout the year. 

Talent Quest

Annually, students are invited to compete in a Talent Quest. In this forum they are able to showcase any talent they possess and are not limited to just music or dance. All competitors perform for a school audience by day and then a community audience by night. This allows the students to not only feel pride in their amazing skills but also provides them with the opportunity for more stage time which enables growth in confidence and resilience.  

The Play

The annual school play provides the opportunity for students to try out their thespian skills and tackle various themes of power, love and friendship upon the Koonung Stage. The students will rehearse up to twice a week for 7 months to put on a finely polished show to sell out audiences in May. Not only can students audition for acting parts, backstage crew and hair and make-up, but they can also apply to part of the leadership team (assistant directors, stage manager and assistant production manager) and often ex-students return to be part of the show. The play is community driven and provides a special place for like-minded students who love the performing arts to be part of something special.

Room 2 Performance

Room 2 is a special space on campus for students to show off their performing arts talents during lunchtimes throughout the year. Room 2 has played host to some fantastic student bands, as well as being the venue for dance competitions and karaoke challenges. A small performance space, Room 2 is a fantastic small step for students who seek to challenge themselves on stage and provides an opportunity for Koonung students and staff to come together to enjoy the wonderful talents of our community.

The Musical Production 

Each year Koonung puts on a musical production that invites and encourages input from all aspects of the Koonung Community. Students audition and interview for their various positions within the show and parents volunteer to join the committee and get involved in costumes, set building, music and fundraising. It is a true community event and many lasting connections are made between students and parents alike. The show is always well-received and the students benefit so much from their involvement, so much so that even after graduating ex-students have been know to return and offer their services in many different areas including administration, musical direction, choreography, backstage, hair and makeup and vocal coaching. Koonung loves to welcome students current, new and old to express themselves and entertain others on the Koonung Stage. Listed below are some Musical Productions from recent years:
